Emery
Somerset Hill Columbus, Ohio, died December 26, 2006, after a long
and courageous fight of complications from muscular sclerosis. Born July
11, 1947 in Memphis, TN, Emery Somerset Hill graduated from Memphis
Booker T. Washington High School. She was a majorette in the school
band, and participated in numerous extra-curricular school activities.
She subsequently attended Tennessee State A&I University where she
earned a BA degree in 1969, majoring in English. In 1968 Emery married
Billy Alvin Hill and after he returned from the military service in Viet
Nam they moved to Columbus, OH in 1971 when Billy was named the Head
Trainer at the university. The coupled was divorced in 1982. While in
Columbus, Emery was employed as a highly respected and admired teacher
in the Columbus Public School System from which she retired in 1993. She
was very active in developing , involving, and leading students in
extra-curricular school activities. He hobbies included reading and
traveling, but her principal hobby was in raising and providing support
and guidance to her two children. Surviving Emery are her two children,
Brian A. Hill and Enshane L. Hill, their spouses and their children and
her older brother, Leo L. Somerset, Jr. of Los Angeles, CA. Both Brian
and Enshane carry on their parents' legacy of achievement, with Brian
having graduated in 1987 from Columbus' St. Charles Preparatory School
and the United States Air Force Academy in 1991. Upon graduation, Brian
was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. In
1992 Brian earned his wings as an Air Force pilot, and flew C-130 and
KC-135 aircraft. Brian subsequently graduated from the United States
Naval War College in Newport, RI in 2006. He was recently promoted to
the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and is stationed in Honolulu, HI with his
wife, Suzette and their 12 year old son, Brayden. Enshane graduated from
the Columbus School for Girls in 1992, and from American University in
1996, with a degree in international relations. While attending American
University she won a scholarship as a foreign exchange student to Kyoto
Japan's Ritsumeikan University. Enshane presently lives in Japan with
her husband, Yukio and their two sons, Yukim who is 7 years old, and
Yukaiya who is 6 years old. A wake will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday,
January 5 at R. S. Lewis Funeral Home, 374 Vance Ave. Funeral services
will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6 at Greater White Stone
Missionary Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully
asks that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
