OBITUARIES

 

 

MRS. ELMER LOUISE TAYLOR JOHNSON, affectionately known as "Elmer T", departed this life on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Saint Francis Hospital. She was a renowned Senior Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc. for 24 years. Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and LeMoyne Owen College. She began her professional career as an elementary teacher with the Memphis City Schools. She ended her 30 year tenure with the system at LaRose Elementary School, where she and her colleagues were among the first to implement a teacher and student uniform program. In 1982, Mrs. Johnson was named sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc. The appointment made Johnson, the fourth Black sales director in the Memphis area. In this capacity, she provided leadership, training, and management for her own unit of beauty consultants. For meeting her sales goals, the company awarded Johnson Pink and Pearlized Cadillac's, diamond jewelry, mink coats, professional packages of office equipment, plaques, certificates and cruises, Mrs. Johnson was involved in many religious, civic, and social activities. She was a member of St. Matthew for over 54 years. As a member, she served on the Board of Trustees, was an active member of the HHH Auxiliary, YCR Usher Board, hostess and building fund committees, Willing Workers, and youth usher advisor. Mrs. Johnson received many awards, honors, and accolades. She was named Bronze Queen of City Beautiful Best "Dressed" by the National Council of Negro Women, and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. Johnson was one of the first Blacks to model for Sears and Roebuck and King Furs. Mrs. Johnson was married to Donald Johnson for 53 years and they have one daughter, Toni LaShawn. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, February 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church, 2016 Pendleton Street. Interment will be Tuesday, February 27 at 2 p.m. in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. R. S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home 901-526-3264
