JAMES HAWES, JR., 69, of Memphis, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. He was born in Memphis on June 27, 1937 to the late Rev. James Hawes, Sr. and Lucille Traylor Hawes. He was a member for more than fifty years at New Salem Baptist Church, Fourth Street, Rev. Mary Moore, Pastor. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Betty Daniel Hawes; one son, James Hawes III; two sisters, Alma H. Black and Catherine H. Rogers both of Memphis; two brothers, Malcolm Hawes (Hazel) of Memphis and Alvin Ray Hawes (Mary) of Savage, MN; two sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Hawes and two sisters, Gwendolyn Woods and Louis Laverne Hawes. James' educational experiences included: La Rose Elementary, Booker T. Washington High; LeMoyne College where he earned a BS degree in Natural Science; St. Mary's University San Antonio, TX, where he received his Master of Arts; the University of Texas, specializing in Rehabilitation Research and Mental Retardation; recipient of a diploma in MIL Medical Entomology from Air University, U.S. Air Force, Lackland, AFB; James served with honors in the U.S. Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge; he received his professional license from the state of TN in General Science and Biology; he taught at Delta Center High School, Walls, MS before giving many years of dedicated service to the Memphis City School System where he retired. James served on the Board of Deacons in his church and was a Devotional leader for the Memphis Baptist Congress of Christian Education for many years. He was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in Memphis. A service of love and precious memories is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16 at New Salem Baptist Church, 955 South Fourth Street. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. on the same date with Rev. Mary Moore officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill-Midtown Cemetery, 1661 Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis. The United States Air Force will conduct the burial at the cemetery.
